DOLE to promote occupational safety, health in 7 industries

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will focus on seven industries in 2011 in the prevention of work hazards and promote workers' health and safety. DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz ordered the Occupational Health and Safety Center (OSHC) to develop occupational, safety, and health (OSH) codes in these areas. "The OSH code of practice will guide these industries in the prevention of work hazards and ensure the health and safety of their workers," she said in an article posted on the DOLE website on Friday. The industries included in DOLE's priority list are:

  • Agribusiness;
  • Business process outsourcing (BPOs);
  • Creative industries;
  • Infrastructure;
  • Manufacturing and logistics;
  • Mining; and
  • Tourism, medical, travel, and retirement industries. "These industries have been identified as economic drivers and key employment generators (KEGS) under the DOLE's Project JobsFit," Baldoz said. Baldoz said ensuring workers' health and safety will ensure productivity and growth and enhance the capability of the KEGs in generating more jobs. As part of the thrusts and plans of the DOLE for 2011, the OSHC, in cooperation with DOLE regional offices, will focus on identifying safety and health issues involving workers and their workplaces in the identified priority industries. OHSC executive director Dr. Ma. Teresita Cocueco said her office will work with the Occupational Safety and Health Networks (OSHNETs) nationwide in:
  • gathering OSH data in the regions;
  • increasing the number of safety and health programs and advocates; and
  • creating a mechanism for reporting work-related injuries and illnesses. Part of the OSHC's cooperative activities with the OSHNets is to conduct researches on controlling work hazards in the creative (entertainment, media, advertising, toys and visual arts) industry; tourism; medical; and travel and retirement industries. "We will also work with our social partners in the government and in the private sector, including the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FFCCCI), BPO organizations, and the Civil Service Commission," Dr. Cocueco said. – VVP, GMANews.TV
