Palace justifies Ogie Alcasid's appointment to People Power Commission

Malacañang on Monday justifies the appointment of singer/composer Ogie Alcasid as a convenor of music and entertainment for the 25th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power I on Feb. 25. “The problem with EDSA People Power anniversary is it’s been 25 years now and the next generation has almost taken the anniversary for granted," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing. “We need to engage the youth in remembering what it was before. I think he can play a role. Ogie is young. He can engage the youth," he added. Aside from being a convenor of music and entertainment, Alcasid also became a member of the EDSA People Power Commission. President Benigno Aquino III was one of the groomsmen in Alcasid’s wedding with singer Regine Velasquez last December. Alcasid, on the other hand, supported Aquino during the May 2010 presidential elections. Aquino earlier appointed Alcasid’s father, Herminio Alcasid Sr., as chairman of the board of directors of the Development Management Corp., a subsidiary of the Philippine National Oil Company. Lacierda said there should be “continuity in making sure that we will not forget what happened prior to the EDSA People Power and that’s one thing he (Ogie) can play a role in." “He connects with the youth and he can be an instrument of making sure that the youth are always, will always be reminded of the significance of the People Power revolution," he said. EDSA People Power was a historic uprising in February 1986 that toppled the decades-old Marcos regime and catapulted Aquino’s mother, Corazon “Cory" Aquino, to the presidency. - Amita O.
