Death toll from floods up to 62; 30 remain missing


The death toll from floods and landslides in past weeks rose to 62 Friday morning, with the latest fatalities from the Mindanao area. In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council identified the two as Lamberto Cortez, 13; and Melanio Bintas, 46. Cortez, a resident of Cabagayan village in Tarragona in Davao Oriental, and Bintas, of San Nicolas village in Panabo City in Davao del Norte, both died from drowning, the NDRRMC said. At least 10 were reported injured while 30 remain missing, the four most recent missing people being from Mindoro Occidental and Davao Oriental. These included:

  • Gilbert Mitra, 34; Eduardo de Austraia; and Sugar Ray Ramos of the motor banca "Lady Joy"; and
  • Jerry Cortez, 7, of Tarragona, Davao Oriental, who was missing after a flash flood. The NDRRMC said the floods have so far affected 368,227 families or 1,871,846 people in 2,077 villages in 181 towns and 17 cities in 25 provinces. A total of 11,001 families or 54,217 people are still being served in 60 evacuation centers. Damage to property was estimated at P1.784 billion, including P422.328 million in agriculture and P1.341 billion in infrastructure. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
