Cops recover high-powered firearms in Cotabato cemetery

Policemen, acting on a tip from a "reliable source," recovered on Thursday night high-powered firearms at a cemetery in Cotabato City. Superintendent Fernando Ortega of the Cotabato City Police Special Action Force said in a phone patch interview on Friday that the huge arms cache was confiscated at the Cotabato City Public Cemetery. The recovered firearms included:

  • five 50-caliber and 30-caliber heavy machine guns with tripod;
  • an 81-millimeter mortar tube;
  • spare barrels of 60- and 30-caliber machine guns, and
  • several mortars, among others. The investigators said a "reliable source" informed them that an "unknown contraband" were to be buried in the cemetery. The recovery of a shovel at the site bolstered speculations that the owners of the arms cache were planning on burying the weapons. "It could not yet be ascertained as of the moment whether there was really an attemp to hide or bury the arms or are to be transported elsewhere," said Chief Superintendent Catalino Suy. – VVP, GMANews.TV
