Eastern Mindanao warned vs floods, landslides

With the return of a cold front, officials in Eastern Mindanao were warned anew Sunday of possible flash floods and landslides. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also warned fishermen in northern and central Luzon not to venture out to sea due to big waves. "The diffused tail-end of a cold front will bring mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Mindanao becoming cloudy with widespread rains over its eastern section, which may trigger flash floods and landslides," NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said in an 11 a.m. weather advisory. Earlier, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted the diffused tail-end of a cold front is affecting Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas, and the easterlies are affecting Eastern Mindanao. PAGASA added the northeast monsoon is prevailing over Northern and Central Luzon. Meanwhile, Ramos advised fishermen in Northern and Central Luzon not to venture out to sea, "due to big waves generated by strong to gale-force northeasterly winds." - KBK, GMANews.TV
