Death toll from floods now 71; 23 still missing


The death toll from floods and landslides since the beginning of the year rose to 71, while at least 23 people remained missing as of Monday morning. In its 6:00 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the most recent fatalities included three fishermen who were initially reported missing. Citing reports from the Philippine Navy, the NDRRMC said the body of Abner Susia, boat captain and owner of the MB Jener, was found at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday off Burdeos, Quezon. The other fishermen who were found dead included:

  • Patricio Peregrino, 56, of Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Virac, Catanduanes; and
  • Pedro Lopez of Brgy. Gaboc, Mercedes, Camarines Norte. The NDRRMC said floods had affected at least 377,944 families (or 1,876,510 people) in 25 provinces. Some 10,727 families (or 52,950 people) are still being served inside 58 evacuation centers. At least 745 houses were completely destroyed while 4,550 were partially-damaged. The damage to property was estimated at P1.785 billion, including P422.458 million in agriculture and P1.342 billion in infrastructure. Of 11 maritime incidents involving 277 fishermen from January 1 up to the present, at least 260 were rescued, four were found dead, while 15 are still missing. – VVP, GMANews.TV
