PHL, China eye new energy, transport, ICT initiatives

The Philippines and China are exploring possible new areas for cooperation such as in transport, new energy, and information and communications technology (ICT) sectors. Officials of the two countries discussed the matter at a meeting at the Department of Foreign Affairs on Jan. 19, the DFA said Monday. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Antonio Rodriguez received Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Vice Minister Xi Guohua at the Department of Foreign Affairs during the meeting, the DFA said in a news release on its website. Rodriguez said Xi’s visit was timely as both countries are seeking closer collaboration in these areas. He said there are many opportunities for the Philippines and China to undertake high-value projects promoting industrial cooperation, science and technology collaboration, and economic investments. Also, Rodriguez noted the visit provided both sides an opportunity to look at long-term prospects for cooperation in those areas strategic to the economic competitiveness of both the Philippines and China. Priority policies During its visit, the Chinese delegation received a briefing on the economic priorities and investment policies of the Aquino administration. Xi also met with Commission on ICT chairman Ivan John Uy and senior officials of the Board of Investments and the Philippine Ports Authority. The delegation, which included 10 other MIIT officials, also visited the Philippine facilities of Chinese ICT and automotive companies. “His visit from January 17 to 19 was the first such high-level visit from an official of China to the Philippines this year," the DFA said. MIIT is a new super-agency in China’s State Council, whose portfolio covers the transport and automotive industry, renewable energy technologies, shipping, and ICT. — With Jerrie Abella/VS, GMANews.TV
