7 MisOr fighters advance in ABAP slugfest

CAGAYAN DE ORO – Host Misamis Oriental's fighters wowed the hometown crowd as seven of them marched to the next round after two days of the 2011 PLDT-ABAP National Amateur Boxing Championship at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Capitol grounds here. Egged on by a largely partisan crowd, Daryl Basadre, brothers Raphael and Roberto Miguel Jalnaiz, Markguil Salvaña, Samboy Lao, Klemen Earl Cabanlit and Rufino Sumaylo lived to fight for the next round after beating their respective opponents. Basadre’s better performance pulled him through in Youth Boys flyweight class over Genisis Libranza of Cabadbaran City, followed by Rafael Jalnaiz’s 17-1 crushing of Archie Estezeydes of Tayabas-Quezon in the kids powder weight class. Older brother Robert Miguel dealt Christian Rabo, also of Tayabas, a clinical 18-4 win in the school boys mosquito division, while Salvaña eliminated Jomeric Delariate of Bicol in the school boys paper weight division. Lao rallied from an 0-5 deficit to defeat Jade Bornea of General Santos City, 10-8, in the Junior Boys pin weight class. Cabanlit lived tup o his billing as he defied the reach advantage of the taller Fernando Tacuyan of Angeles City in the Jr. Boys light flyweight division, 14-8, and Sumaylo booted out Jeric Fernando of Zamboanga City, 11-4, in the Youth Boys pin weight class. MisOr’s lone casualty was Charlie Boy Vertulazo, who lost to Jenno Cabugngan of Tagbilaran City in the Youth Boy’s bantamweight division elimination. Martin Cordova of Bago City also marched to the second round after beating Velmark Dignos of Cebu City via 10-3 decision in the Youth Boys pin weight class. Cordova scored all of the six points in the first round and had reached nine points when Dignos scored all of his three points successively before the second round ended at 10-3. The two fighters engaged in a heated exchange in the third round but none of the punches made it to the judges' scoring pads. Bukidnon’s Mark Anthony Florida scored a Referee Stopped Contest win in one minute and 39 seconds of the second round over Juren Laborado of Bacolod City, while Eumir Marcial proved too classy for Dexter Dimaculangan of Laguna as the bout ended in another RSC win by the Zamboangueño fighter in one minute and 37 seconds of the first round. Argie Moraca of Valencia City scored a 17-10 win over Paul Sacupon of Samar, also in the Jr. Boys light flyweight division. - KY, RCJ, GMANews.TV
