NDRRMC: Flood death toll up to 73; damage breaches P2B mark


The death toll from floods and landslides in recent weeks went up to 73 Wednesday morning, even as the damage to property breached the P2-billion mark. In its 6 a.m. Jan. 26 update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said a man initially reported dead turned out to be alive and had gone home. Among the latest fatalities were:

  • Bartolome Rabonque, 57, of Barangay Balubo, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur (flash flood);
  • Relos Rabonque, 12, of Barangay Balubo, Esperanza, Agusan del Sur (flash flood), initially reported missing; and
  • Bertlado Ploriz, 61, of P1 La Perian, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur (drowned). On the other hand, the NDRRMC said Bunoy Pera, 40, of Sta. Elena in Camarines Norte, turned out to alive and had "returned home and (is) recovering." It also said one Daryl Dave Amay from Kamputhaw in Cebu City was missing due to strong water current in Busay River caused by heavy rains in Metro Cebu. The NDRRMC said the rains affected 383,796 families or 1,907,644 people in 2,123 villages in 184 towns and 17 cities in 26 provinces. As of Wednesday, a total of 1,293 families or 5,811 people are still being served in 44 evacuation centers. Damage to property was estimated at P2,071,891,708.49, including P706,903,854.83 in agriculture and P1,341,941,553 in infrastructure; and P21,046,300 in private property. Dinagat Islands in northeast Mindanao was placed under a state of calamity on Jan. 11, the NDRRMC said. Diarrhea Meanwhile, disaster management officials in Bicol agreed on education as a long-term solution to diarrhea cases in the area. "(The Department of Health in Bicol) sees as long-term solution to the diarrhea cases the advocacy of proper hygiene and sanitation through education of the population and the installation of sanitary toilets and water sources through the help of NGO," the NDRRMC said. — RSJ, GMANews.TV
