NDRRMC: 3 killed in Mindanao floods, 1 missing


The death toll from floods brought by a low-pressure area in northern Mindanao rose to three Wednesday night, even as at least one person was reported missing. In its 8 p.m. Wednesday update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified two of the fatalities who died due to drowning as:

    * Christopher Laraga, 20, of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; and * Alger Jorge Boholano, 42, also of the city.
The third fatality was from Doña Rosario village in Tubay town in Agusan del Norte, it added. At least one person, Noel Molder of Gingoog City, was reported injured, while one person was reported missing in Barangay Matingbe, San Francisco, Surigao del Norte. On the other hand, the NDRRMC said four fishermen from the fishing boat “Daner" that capsized off Bicol were accounted for and safe. The four, identified as Reynaldo Lipa, Jesus Lanares, Junjun Gaupo, and Ariel Niez returned home safe and in good condition on the night of February 1.
Floods In Agusan del Norte, 34 villages in six municipalities are still flooded, with 90 percent of Butuan City underwater and the main thoroughfares leading to the city’s Central Business District mostly impassable. In Surigao del Sur, Sitio Casting, Barangay Bayan, Marihatag and Sitio Sampinit, Barangay Gamut in Tago are still submerged in floodwaters. In Surigao del Norte, about 30 percent of the streets in Surigao City proper are in knee-deep floods. In Misamis Oriental, Gingoog City, Talisayan town and Camiguin were flooded. Victims were evacuated to barangay halls, multi-purpose center, and chapels and to a waiting shed. In the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, heavy rains pounded and big waves battered coastal areas in Jolo, Sulu, affecting four barangays with still undetermined number of families displaced and number of houses damaged. Some residents took refuge in safer areas. On the other hand, Barangay roads in Poblacion, Ampason, San Vicente in Surigao del Sur were impassable to light vehicles. In Carrascal town, barangay roads in Panikian and Tag-anito are impassable to light vehicles. In San Miguel town, Sitio Gamut-San Miguel Road and San Miguel Bridge are impassable due to settlement of Pier 4. In Surigao del Norte, a portion of Surigao-Davao Coastal (national) Road at Barangay Cagdianao, Claver, is impassable due to erosion of land from an elevated location. A section of a national highway along Bad-as, Placer Road is flooded and is passable only to big trucks. In Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas, the Mahaplag-Sogod Road along Km1015+260 Dampoy section was affected by landslide Jan. 31. On the other hand, at least 61,651 families or 309,373 people in 420 barangays in the Southern Leyte, Misamis Oriental and Camiguin, and Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands were affected by the floods.
