PAGASA: LPA threatens several provinces in Mindanao


A low-pressure area near Zamboanga City threatens to bring flash floods and landslides to several provinces in Mindanao. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the LPA was estimated at 130 km southwest of Zamboanga City as of 11 a.m. "This weather system is expected to bring scattered to widespread rains over Zamboanga provinces and the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," it said. It reminded residents in low-lying areas, along river banks and along the mountain slopes to take all necessary precautionary measures. Death toll of LPA-triggered floods The death toll from floods triggered by a low-pressure area in parts of Visayas and Mindanao rose to nine Friday morning, while at least four others remained missing. In its 8 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the latest fatalities included two each from Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Sur. The NDRRMC report identified them as:

  • Carlito Benocilla, 26; and Raymund Bonotan, 25, who were buried in a landslide in Masgad, Malimono, Surigao del Norte;
  • Ruben Ramos, 40; and Richard Ramos, 1, who drowned in Sta. Cruz village, Rosario, Agusan del Sur; and
  • Christopher Laraga, 20; and Alger Jorge Boholano, 42, who drowned in Gingoog City (Misamis Oriental).
Earlier reported dead were:
  • Reyam Baham, 7; and Ricarte Ganzan, 70, who drowned in Binuangan village in Tubay in Agusan del Norte;
  • Rocel Antipuesto of Maco, Compostela Valley.
Injured was Noel Moldera of Gingoog CIty, while the missing were identified as:
  • Jonathan Moreno, 33; and Albert Cutamura, 24, fishermen of Cabancalan village in President Carlos P. Garcia town in Bohol, who were on their way back to Bohol;
  • Teresita Acion, 62, missing due to a flash floods caused by heavy rains at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Compostela town in Compostela Valley; and
  • Amado Basadre, of San Francisco in Surigao del Norte.
At least 92,487 families or 465,550 people in 541 villages in Southern Leyte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental and Camiguin; Compostela Valley, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, SUrigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands; and Sulu were affected. A total of 9,274 families or 47,632 people are housed in 41 evacuation centers. Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said floodwaters had started to subside in some areas, but classes in elementary and high schools remained suspended in Surigao del Norte. Classes in all levels remained suspended in Dinagat Islands, it added. At least 45 families were evacuated to the Compostela municipal gym while heavy rains and big waves hit shorelines of Jolo, Sulu. — LBG, GMANews.TV
