NDRRMC: Death toll from recent floods rises to 15


The death toll from a second wave of flash floods and landslides triggered by a low-pressure area rose to at least 15 as of Saturday morning, while at least three remain missing. In its Saturday 5 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the latest fatalities included four people buried alive in a landslide in Surigao del Sur. The NDRRMC identified the fatalities from the Surigao del Sur landslide as:

    * Nenita Corpuz, 57; and Julie Culapu, 47, of Cantilan in Surigao del Sur; * Isagani Borja, 25, of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur; and * Aladin Corporal of Madrid town in Surigao del Sur.
Another fatality was identified as Teresita Acion, 62, who was initially reported missing in a landslide in Caraga Region. Injured was Noel Moldera of Gingoog City; while reported missing were Amado Basadre and two fishermen aboard a motorized pump boat that encountered huge waves while en route to Bohol in Central Visayas from Maasin City in Southern Leyte . The NDRRMC said the second wave of floods and landslides had affected 104,484 families or 530,519 people in 566 villages. At least 14,779 families or 72,995 people were housed in 41 evacuation centers as of Friday. Some 219 houses were destroyed while 86 were damaged. Damage to property was estimated at P418.137 million. Jolo under state of calamity Jolo town in Sulu province was placed under a state of calamity after heavy rains and big waves hit its coastal areas this week. The rains and waves affected the Walled City, Alat, Chinese Pier, Asturias, Takut-Takut, Tulay, Town Proper, San Raymundo and Kasangayan villages. At least 1,140 families or 4,560 people in the villages were displaced, while 30 houses and a bamboo footbridge and other pathways were damaged. "Sources of potable water in Jolo, Sulu are already contaminated," the NDRRMC said. — LBG, GMA News Online
