Friends seek justice for slain coed on Facebook

Barely a week after college student Mizzielle Jamyka Cruz Gutierrez was murdered, her friends and family have taken to Facebook, YouTube, and other social media in their search for justice. On the evening of Feb. 1, Gutierrez was found dead with ten stab wounds at her boyfriend Christopher Von Moraleja's home in Pasay City. Moraleja, the prime suspect in Gutierrez's murder, is still at large. However, Gutierrez's friends and family have taken online the search for the suspect, setting up the "Justice for Myka Gutierrez" Facebook Page where people could share messages of condolence and possible leads to Moraleja's whereabouts. Social media have been recognized by the Philippine National Police (PNP) as useful tools for law enforcement. Late last year, the PNP in Laguna set up a Facebook Page to help track down criminals. The PNP also has its own IT arm that regularly addresses issues of cyber security and cybercrime prevention. "The Paulinian community will always remember the memories you shared with us. May you rest in peace... To Myka's family and friends, my deep condolences. Keep the faith, hopefully by God's grace we may find justice for her," Jovygail Hibo wrote on the Justice for Myka Gutierrez wall.

"May you find peace on God's arms. We cry for justice!" said Pierre Stefan Peig Lalin. Even strangers stopped by and offered their support: "Condolence to the family. even if i dont know myka ill pray for her. may she rest in peace. nakakalungkot nman (It's so sad.)," said Ferdinand Raqueno. "I may not know her, but still I extend my condolences to the family, may justice be served," added Inna Katrina Argente Dado.

"hindi ko man kilala c ate MYKA, pero may kirot at galit sa puso ku .. ayoko kaawaan xa sa ngyari dahil alam ko hindi yun ang bagay na gusto nya maramdaman ntn at ng mga pamilyang naulila nya , dahil tanging mggawa lang natin tulungan xa mkamit yung hustisya," wrote MiMi CHu. (I may not have known Myka [Gutierrez], but there's pain and anger in my heart. I know that she wouldn't want us to feel sorry for her, because the only thing we should be doing right now is to help her find justice.) Several people have also shared photos and other information about the suspect in the hope that these may lead to his arrest. As of Feb. 6, less than a week after the page was created, it has already amassed over 4,300 "likes".

Meanwhile, Gutierrez's own personal Facebook page has continued to remain active as a kind of bulletin board for the victim's family and friends. The most recent posts include links to related news articles and the schedule of memorial services. Elsewhere on the Web, Gutierrez's former work colleagues have pitched in by setting up the Justice for Myka website. The site contains a brief YouTube memorial video, links to Gutierrez's Facebook pages, and links to related news. The site also has an information page with photos and a description of Moraleja, as well as contact details the public may use to provide any information concerning the suspect.
