NDRRMC: Death toll from Visayas, Mindanao floods up to 21


The death toll from floods and landslides that hit parts of Visayas and Mindanao rose to 21 as of Sunday night, even as 66 were injured and one was missing. In its 6 p.m. Sunday update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said six of the latest fatalities were from Sulu. The NDRRMC identified four of the six as Kasma Alih, 13; Kristina Abduhadi, 12; Abraham Dagun, 1; and Kurais Sappayane, 72, of Sulu. It said the two unidentified fatalities were males who also drowned in Jolo, Sulu. At least 66 were injured, 65 of them in Sulu. Of the 65, nine were confined at a hospital. Still missing was Amado Basadre, 30, of Matingbe village in San Francisco, Surigao del Norte. The NDRRMC said the floods and landslides have affected 127,157 families or 599,553 people in 697 villages in 70 towns and five cities. As of 11 p.m. Saturday, 4,441 families or 21,820 people were housed at 101 evacuation centers. A total of 234 houses were destroyed while 442 were damaged. Damage to property was estimated at P427.194 million, including P8.088 million in agriculture and P419.105 million in infrastructure. — RSJ, GMA News
