IP phone shipments to exceed 40M in 2015

A new report from research firm In-Stat forecasts that IP phone shipments, for both business and consumer, will exceed 40 million units in 2015, with the movement toward IP telephony systems continues as picking up momentum in 2010. Within the business market, corded IP phones remain the standard, and will continue to dominate the enterprise IP phone market throughout the forecast period. “IP phones are enabling businesses and consumers to use their telephone system for more advanced communications," said Norm Bogen, VP for digital entertainment at In-Stat. “These applications are more clearly understood in the enterprise space, where IP-based communication is replacing TDM networks at a steady pace. On the consumer side, the market for Wi-Fi phones has not materialized, instead, DECT phones dominate the consumer IP phone market." Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • Cisco and Avaya are leading the market for enterprise IP phones. Among other major competitors are Aastra, Alcatel-Lucent, LG , Mitel, NEC, Polycom, ShoreTel, and Siemens.
  • Outside of service provider deployments and Skype, consumer adoption of VoIP has been minimal.
  • Business Wi-Fi/Cellular Phone Shipments grew by nearly 40 percent in 2010 over 2009. Among the leading handset OEMs in the dual-mode segment, HTC saw the biggest share gain.
