Flower prices go up as Valentine's Day nears

With only days to go before Valentine’s Day on February 14, flower prices have started going up in parts of Metro Manila. A report of radio dzBB’s Glen Juego said the prices some flower arrangements nearly doubled at the Farmer’s Market in Cubao, Quezon City. The price hikes were noted in the following:

  • one-dozen arrangements of long-stemmed roses (from P250 to P500);
  • bouquets of stargazers (from P250 to P320), and
  • bouquets of Malaysian mums (from P100 to P450 or P500). Police on alert Meanwhile, report by radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo said the Manila Police District has ordered its personnel to be on alert for muggers out to victimize lovers. MPD head Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla ordered security and visibility heightened during the Valentine weekend in public areas including malls, parks, and popular "lovers’ spots" along Roxas Boulevard. Similar heightened visibility was also ordered near flower shops in the city’s Dangwa area, where muggers are likely to spot potential victims buying flowers for their loved ones. Rongavilla also appealed to motels to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in their establishments to help deter crime, or help the police track down criminals. The MPD chief ordered his men to be on the lookout as well for potential terrorist attacks, citing the Valentine’s Day bombing in 2005. In that incident, at least four people were killed and 60 injured when a bomb exploded in a bus in Makati City. – VVP, GMA News
