NDRRMC: 5 villages in Jolo still in knee-deep floods


Despite improving weather conditions, at least five villages in Jolo town in Sulu province remained in knee-deep floods, disaster management officials said Thursday. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said floods caused by rains from a low-pressure area last week had caused more than P538 million in damages. In its update Thursday, the NDRRMC said the submerged areas in Jolo included Asturias, San Raymundo, Alat, Tulay, and Takut-Takut villages. At least 135,086 families or 638,254 persons in 768 villages of 85 towns and five cities in Capiz in Region VI; Southern Leyte in Region VIII; Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental and Camiguin in Region X; Compostela Valley in Region XI; Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands in Caraga region; and Sulu in ARMM were affected. As of 6 a.m. Thursday, some 910 families or 4,264 people were being served in 31 evacuation centers, the NDRRMC said, adding that other evacuees started to return to their respective homes. The death toll remained at 21 while one remained missing. The number of injured, meanwhile, shot up to 164, most of them from Sulu. Of the 163 injured from Sulu, 63 were hospitalized while 100 were considered outpatient cases. Damage to property was estimated at P538.636 million, including P9.650 million in agriculture and P528.986 million in infrastructure. - KBK, GMA News
