Whistle-blower Mendoza cautioned vs accepting govt post

Saying it may send the wrong signals, a Catholic bishop on Thursday cautioned former state auditor Heidi Mendoza against accepting an offer by President Benigno Aquino III to work in the government. Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo said joining the Aquino administration is not prudent and could trigger misinterpretation. “It will not appear good. It would be better for her to remain as a whistle-blower and avoid impression that she’s being used by some politicians," Bagaforo said in an interview on Church-run Radio Veritas. Excerpts of the interview were posted Thursday night on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site. Bagaforo said some people may accuse Mendoza of letting herself be used to destroy the image of the past administration. On the other hand, retired Bishop Teodoro Bacani Jr. said it should be up to Mendoza whether to accept Aquino’s job offer. Mendoza had testified on alleged financial irregularities at the Armed Forces of the Philippines before congressional investigations. However, she has received death threats after testifying. Bagaforo called on Mendoza to just work in the private sector to avoid wrong suspicion on her intention to expose alleged anomalies in the AFP. Earlier this week, Aquino said he offered Mendoza “several options" in his administration when they met last Monday. - KBK, GMA News
