Phivolcs: Magnitude-6.6 quake recorded off Sulu


A magnitude-6.6 quake was recorded off Sulu in Mindanao Thursday night, even as state seismologists warned of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 10:39 p.m. and was tectonic in origin. In its latest bulletin on the quake, Phivolcs said the epicenter was 323 km southeast of Jolo. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity III in Davao City; and Intensity II in General Santos City. An Intensity II quake is "Slightly Felt," or felt by few individuals at rest indoors. On the other hand, an Intensity III quake is "Weak," felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings. At this intensity, the vibration is felt like the passing of a light truck, while dizziness and nausea are experienced by some people. Phivolcs said aftershocks were expected from Thursday night's quake. On the other hand, the United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.5. It estimated the epicenter at 310 km southeast of Jolo, Sulu; 325 km southwest of General Santos City; 1,185 km south of Manila; or 2,130 km east-northeast of Jakarta, Indonesia.—JV, GMA News
