Internet users warned on viral Facebook app

Internet security firm Symantec said it has recently detected a viral Facebook application toolkit called NeoApp. Once a user installs the Facebook application and grants it permission, he or she will show up in the administration panel of NeoApp, said Symantec. “From there, the culprit can send randomized messages to this user and his or her friends — all through automated posting job queues, statistic pages, and easy-to-use templates," the company said. NeoApp is being sold for $50 but can be found for much less in specific places. This allows almost anyone, even those without coding skills, to create a fast-spreading viral message on Facebook. The toolkit even explains where to place links to funny videos and where to put the survey links in order to maximize the cash back. The advertisement indicates that the motivation behind the toolkit is to make money. While Facebook has a dedicated team hunting for malicious applications and shutting them down, Symantec advised users to be vigilant of suspicious applications such as those requesting access to your personal information. “They should think twice if it really needs to have access or if it might just be another scam. If you have fallen victim to such a scam, please go to your account’s Privacy Settings and remove the application from your profile immediately," it said. — Newsbytes.ph
