MILF frees 6 captured soldiers in Sultan Kudarat

Kidapawan City - Moro rebels on Tuesday released six soldiers they caught last week while allegedly tailing two of their senior officials in Sultan Kudarat province. Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) spokesman Eid Kabalu said the six were held after they were caught following him and MILF ceasefire committee member Toks Ibrahim last Feb. 12. Kabalu said they were that time on their way to a village in Colombio town to conduct local peace talks. He said the soldiers belonged to the 10th Infantry Division operating in Columbio. "The soldiers were trying to penetrate areas where localized peace talks were ongoing," Kabalu said, adding that the local talks were part of the ongoing peace negotiations between the government and the MILF, which resumed on Feb. 9 in Kuala Lumpur. The soldiers, clad in civilian clothes, were armed with handguns and two grenades when arrested in Barangay Polomolok, according to Kabalu. Kabalu formally turned over the soldiers, including their pistols and explosives, to the International Monitoring Team (IMT) based in Cotabato City. The arrest of government troopers last Feb. 12 was the second this week, according to reports. On Feb 8, the MILF briefly detained two intelligence agents of the 6th Infantry Division who were caught roaming around Camp Darapanan in Sultan Kudarat. Camp Darapanan is the administrative headquarters of MILF where the Office of the MILF Peace Negotiating and its Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA) are situated. - Malu Cadelina Manar/KBK, GMA News
