Phivolcs: 2 quakes hit Baguio City in less than 3 hours


(Updated 3:40 p.m.) Hours after the first, a second quake rocked Baguio City and parts of Benguet province in Northern Luzon Thursday afternoon, state seismologists said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 2:25 p.m., more than two hours after a magnitude-3.3 quake rocked the area. In its earthquake bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake measured magnitude 3.1, and was tectonic in origin. It said the epicenter was 7 km southeast of Baguio City. The quake was felt at Intensity II in the city and in La Trinidad town in Benguet, it added. But Phivolcs said no damage or aftershock was expected from the afternoon quake. Meanwhile, the magnitude-3.3 quake, also tectonic in origin, was recorded 11:54 a.m. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was 8 km northwest of La Trinidad in Benguet. The quake was felt at Intensity II in Baguio City, it said. Intensity II is considered "slightly felt," or felt by few individuals at rest indoors. "Hanging objects swing slightly. Still Water in containers oscillates noticeably," it said. Earlier on Thursday, a magnitude-2.3 quake rocked Romblon province in Southern Luzon.
