DFA: No Filipino hurt in protest rally in Bahrain

The Philippine Embassy in Manama, Bahrain reported that no Filipinos were injured in the rallies at the Pearl Roundabout there, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. A statement issued by the DFA on Thursday said the Philippine Embassy in Bahrain has advised Filipinos to stay indoors, refrain from joining the rallies and monitor the ongoing unrest carefully. The DFA said thousands of protesters took over the main square on Tuesday, calling for regime change, better job opportunities, and better treatment for Shia Bahrainis. Bahrain, ruled by a Sunni Muslim royal family, has a two-thirds Shiite population, the DFA cited. "Young Shiites have staged violent protests in the past to complain about corruption, unemployment and discrimination. Many of the Shiites say the country’s constitution has done little to improve their conditions," said the DFA. – VVP, GMA News
