Phivolcs: Magnitude-5 quake hits Baguio City

A magnitude-5 quake rocked Baguio City and parts of northern Luzon early Friday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was tectonic in origin, and was recorded at 6:20 a.m. It said the epicenter was 9 km northwest of La Trinidad town in Benguet province. On Thursday, two quakes had rocked Baguio in a span of less than three hours. Phivolcs said Friday’s quake was felt at Intensity IV in Baguio City; Intensity III in San Fernando, La Union; and Intensity II in Burgos, Ilocos Sur.

An Intensity IV quake is described as "moderately strong" or felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. "Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard," Phivolcs said on its website. An Intensity III quake is "weak" or felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings. An Intensity II quake, on the other hand, is "slightly felt," or felt by few individuals at rest indoors. Surigao quake Meanwhile, a predawn magnitude-3.6 quake rocked the Surigao area in Mindanao Friday, but state seismologists said no damage was expected. Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 5:42 a.m., and was tectonic in origin. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake’s epicenter was 43 km southwest of Surigao City. The quake was felt at Intensity II in Surigao City. Phivolcs said no aftershock was expected from Friday’s predawn quake. — RSJ, GMA News
