2 killed in armed encounter off Cebu town


A "Bantay Dagat (Sea Watch)" volunteer and a suspected illegal fisherman were killed in an armed encounter off Argao town in Cebu, a radio report said Saturday. The fishermen allegedly fired at the volunteers when they were accosted, according to a report by radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate. Citing initial police reports, the radio report identified the fatalities as Bantay Dagat volunteer Alvin Galeos, 39; and fisherman Joel Guisagan, 40. A report on online news Super Balita Cebu, said the incident happened Friday midnight. DzBB's report said authorities are tracking down the other fishermen, who managed to escape after the encounter. An initial investigation showed the shootout occurred off Barangay Talaga in Argao town, as the volunteers were patrolling the shores of the village. They saw a boat enter the marine sanctuary and accosted the group of fishermen, who allegedly fired at them and prompted them to fire back. — LBG, GMA News
