Phivolcs: Quakes rock Bataan and Sorsogon


A magnitude-4.5 quake rocked Bataan province Saturday morning, but there was no initial report of damage or casualties, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. According to Phivolcs, the quake was recorded at 8:10 a.m. and was tectonic in origin. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake was at 49 km southwest of Balanga, Bataan. Earlier on Saturday, a predawn magnitude-2.9 quake rocked Sorsogon in Bicol Region. The temblor was recorded at 2:46 a.m., and was tectonic in origin. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was 14 km northwest of Dansol (Sorsogon) Quakes rock Biliran and Siargao Last Friday night, quakes also rocked Biliran Islands in Eastern Visayas and Siargao in Mindanao. Phivolcs said the first quake was recorded off Siargao at 6:28 p.m., and was tectonic in origin. It said the quake measured magnitude 3.1, with its epicenter estimated at 27 km northwest of Dapa, Siargao, in Surigao del Norte. It said the quake was felt at Intensity II at Loreto, Dinagat Island. A second quake measuring magnitude 3.7 was recorded off Biliran Island at 8:39 p.m., and was also tectonic. Phivolcs said the epicenter was 13 km southwest of Kawayan town. It said the quake was felt at Intensity III in Naval, Biliran province; and Leyte, Leyte. The quake was felt at Intensity II in San Isidro, Leyte. An Intensity III quake is considered "weak" while an Intensity II is considered "slightly felt" in Phivolcs' earthquake intensity scale. — LBG, GMA News
