MLB legend Griffey to visit next month

Major League Baseball (MLB) legend George Kenneth "Ken" Griffey, Jr. will visit the Philippines as a sports envoy of the United States’ State Department from March 1 to 4. The US Embassy, in its Facebook page on Saturday, said Griffey will hold baseball clinics for coaches and players in Manila and Cebu, as well as engage in community service events. It added that two other former professional baseball players will accompany Griffey on his trip: Joe Logan, who played with the Montreal Expos organization; and Ken’s brother Craig, a former player with the Seattle Mariners organization. Both Logan and Craig are current members of the coaching staff with the Orlando Reds, a minor league team in Florida, the Embassy said. The Embassy said the baseball legends will conduct a series of baseball clinics in Manila and Cebu with Filipino coaches and players from different age groups and representing local leagues and programs throughout the country. "Clinics for coaches will focus on teaching the basics of teamwork and sportsmanship, identifying and developing talent, and leading practices and clinics; clinics for players will focus on developing fundamental baseball skills like hitting, infield, pitching, and outfield," it said. They will conduct community service events as well. On March 1, the legends will be at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Manila from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On March 2, they will be at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. On March 3, they will be at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City from 4 to 6 p.m. On March 4, they will be at the Aboitiz Sports Field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ken Griffey, nicknamed "Junior" and "The Kid", is a former MLB center fielder and was one of the most prolific home run hitters and best defensive players in baseball history. – JVP, KY, GMA News
