Aquino wants EDSA spirit passed on to new generation

Saying one generation has already passed since the 1986 People Power Revolution that installed his late mother to the presidency, President Benigno Aquino III wants to pass on to the Filipino youth the meaning of the revolution. Presidential deputy spokeswoman Abigail Valte even said that most of her staff members in Malacañang were born after the revolution, which toppled the late President Ferdinand Marcos and placed into power former President Corazon Aquino. "It is surprising that we have an entire generation born after EDSA-1 revolution. It's very important we engage our youth when it comes to the EDSA-1 celebration... to explain to them what it meant to our democracy and to pass on to them the spirit of the revolution," she said on government-run dzRB radio. In his speech at the Philippine Military Academy last Saturday, Aquino appealed to Filipinos to remain united and to work together for a better future. "Noong EDSA, nagkaisa ang sambayanan. Ngayon po, ika-25 taon na ginugunita ang EDSA, may bago nang henerasyon. Itong bagong henerasyon kailangan na po nating pagkalooban ng tama at ginintuang kinabukasan," the President said. Aquino pointed out that the police and military united with the people during the first EDSA revolution. In contrast, the Martial Law had divided the police and military from the people, he added. The nation marks next week the 25th anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution. — JE, GMA News
