NDRRMC: Floods force evacuation in Mindanao

Predawn flash floods forced the evacuation of over 800 families in Misamis Oriental and Sarangani provinces in Mindanao on Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. In its report, the NDRRMC said a flash flood and whirlwind hit Pangyan and Burias villages in Glan town in Sarangani at 1:00 a.m. The NDRRMC said the houses of around 103 families (or 515 people) were either partially destroyed or completely damaged. The victims include:

  • three families (15 people) in Pangyan town, and
  • 100 families (500 people) in Burias. Flash floods also hit Lagonglong and Medina towns in Misamis Oriental at 5:00 a.m., due to continuous heavy rains. Some 60 families or 300 people were affected, including:
  • 10 families (50 people) in Cabug village in Medina; and
  • 50 families (250 people) in Dampil village in Lagonglong. The affected families in Misamis Oriental are now staying in designated evacuation centers. The NDRRMC said the town disaster management council in Lagonglong in Misamis Oriental alerted other villages including Manaol, Lumbao, Cambulawan, Dampil and Poblacion. The residents were advised to take precautionary measures because eavy rains were still being experienced in those areas, the NDRRMC said. Flash floods, landslides Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said flash floods and landslides loom over parts of Eastern Mindanao Wednesday. "Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Eastern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," PAGASA said in its 5:00 a.m. bulletin. "Southern Luzon will have mostly cloudy skies with light rains. The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated light rains," PAGASA said. It added moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast will prevail over Northern and Eastern Luzon and coming from the Northeast and East over the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough, PAGASA said. – VVP, GMA News
