DFA: Number of Filipinos missing in New Zealand quake climbs to 14

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the number of Filipinos missing in New Zealand after Tuesday’s magnitude 6.3 quake in Christchurch has climbed to 14. The persons believed to be trapped in rubbles of CTV building were:

  • Jesse Lloyd Redoble;
  • John Christopher Chua;
  • Ezra Mae Medalle;
  • Emmabel Anova;
  • Jewel Francisco;
  • Ivy JKane Cabunillas;
  • Elisa Torres;
  • Mary Louise Anne Amantillo;
  • Valquin Bensurto;
  • Rhea Mae Sumalpong;
  • Erica Nora and Lalaine Agatep. Those missing in other areas near the CTV building were Rita Estrella and Hayley Concepcion. On Thursday, New Zealand officials said they have started to shift operations from "rescue of victims" to "retrieval of bodies" as hopes dim in finding more survivors, three days after the disaster. However, Foreign Affairs spokesman Eduardo Malaya said Philippine officials in Christchurch have asked the New Zealand government to resume rescue operations because there are indications that the most of the 14 missing Filipinos are still alive. Malaya said, “They have been receiving text messages from these missing individuals and they are not presumed dead." A Philippine Embassy tea, in Wellington arrived in Christchurch on Thursday morning to look for the missing Filipinos and to check on the condition of other Filipinos affected by the quake. – VVP, GMA News
