PAGASA: SLPA intensifies, threatens Mindanao
A shallow low-pressure area (SLPA) east of Mindanao intensified into a low-pressure area (LPA) Friday morning, threatening to bring flash floods and landslides to parts of Mindanao. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the LPA may start bringing rains Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. "Starting tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning, this weather system is expected to bring scattered to widespread rains over Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," PAGASA said in an 11 a.m. advisory. It said that as of 10 a.m. Friday, the LPA was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 880 km east of Davao City. PAGASA reminded residents living in low-lying areas, along river banks and near mountain slopes to take all the necessary precautionary measures. Earlier, PAGASA said it was monitoring not only the SLPA but another LPA behind it. Any one of the two weather disturbances may be named "Amang" if it intensifies into a cyclone while in Philippine territory. — LBG, GMA News
