Daughter denies actor Paquito Diaz is dead

Paquito Diaz, the veteran movie actor known for playing kontrabida roles, is very much alive and recuperating well from his illness, his daughter said Sunday, belying earlier reports. In a phone interview with GMA’s “Showbiz Central" Sunday, Cheska Diaz said she was “very shocked" when news came out in the Philippine Star and its sister publication, Pilipino Star Ngayon, that her father perished in a hospital in Albay. “Two weeks ago, he was in the ICU (intensive care unit), but then, a few days ago, the doctors were saying that dad is getting better, so I was shocked when this news came out that he’s dead," she said. She added that her dad will probably be discharged from the hospital by Tuesday next week.

The veteran actor’s daughter also criticized the newspaper that published the erroneous report. “It’s really not good to bring out a report especially when it comes to the life of a person. It’s not responsible journalism. It’s really not… They should be responsible enough to ask," Cheska said. In 2002, the elder Diaz suffered a hemorrhagic stroke that caused his health condition to worsen. Earlier this year, he was rushed to Estevez Memorial Hospital in Legazpi, Albay, due to an illness. Diaz appeared mostly in the movies as bad guys or the evil mastermind in action films. He has also portrayed supporting roles in comedy films with Dolphy, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and the late actors Babalu, Panchito, and Rene Requiestas. — with Jesse Edep/KBK/HS, GMA News
