5 bolt Teresa, Rizal jail; 1 killed, 3 recaptured

(Updated 4:27 p.m.) Five inmates managed to break out of a jail in Rizal province before dawn Monday, but one of them was shot dead while three were recaptured during pursuit operations. A report by radio dzBB's Glen Juego said the five managed to pry a portion of the Teresa town jail's ceiling and roof to make their escape. Senior Superintendent Manuel Prieto, Rizal police chief, did not immediately identify the five inmates, saying only one of whom remained at large as of Monday morning. Later in the afternoon, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology head Director Rosendo Dial relieved warden Superintendent Amado Concepcion and Jail Officers 1 Rey Bungaoan and Lito Pangaluran. The three officials also face possible administrative charges for the jailbreak, according to a report by radio dzBB's Allan Gatus. Dial named Chief Inspector Melchor Bugaran as the town jail's acting warden.
An earlier dzBB report cited initial police reports that one of the inmates was shot dead while three were recaptured. Of the three, two were wounded. An initial investigation showed the five escaped inmates were detained at the three-storey jail's third floor. Teresa is a first-class town with a population of 44,436 inhabitants in 6,374 households. — RSJ, GMA News
