Senate commends Donaire for boxing victory

The Senate on Monday adopted two resolutions commending Filipino boxing champion Nonito "The Flash" Donaire Jr. for winning the bantamweight belts from Mexican foe Fernando Montiel. Senate Resolutions 387 and 391 commended Donaire for winning the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight crowns after beating Montiel via technical knockout during the second round of their match last Feb. 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Senators Lito Lapid and Pia Cayetano, who filed the resolutions, called Donaire "the supreme athlete" who serves as an "inspiration and shining example" for all Filipinos, especially the youth. Donaire joins eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes and lady world champ Ana Julaton as current Filipino world titlists. - Kimberly Jane Tan/GMA News
