Manufacturers see bread prices rising this month

The head of a bread manufacturers’ group on Tuesday said the steady rise in prices of bread ingredients, particularly flour, will likely pull up prices of bread products this month. PhilBaking president Walter Co said the retail price of flour rose to P900 from P860 a bag — up P40, which translates to a P1 increase in the price of bread loaves , and 50 centavos more for a 10-piece bag of pan de sal. Ric Pinca, executive director of Philippine Association of Flour Millers (PAFMil), explained that the price of flour rose with the increase wheat prices since last year. Flour is mainly made out of wheat. Pinca said the price of wheat “is steady at the moment." Bread prices rose last month due to the higher price of sugar, which peaked at P3,000 a sack or P60-P65 per kg in the retail market. Co said the price of sugar has settled and started to come down a bit but remains at levels not enough to offset the higher price of flour. Prices of Shell’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) also rose by P1.50 per kg or P16.50 per cylinder tank on Tuesday, reflecting higher contract prices in the international market, according to the company. LPG is a component in baking bread, and is an item in the cost of production. — PE/VS, GMA News
