Ex-AFP chief Cimatu questioned over Iloilo properties

Senator Franklin Drilon on Thursday questioned former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Roy Cimatu on two real estate properties in Iloilo that he and his wife allegedly bought in the 1980s. During Thursday's Senate inquiry, Drilon said documents reaching him indicate that Cimatu and his wife Fe bought two properties in Iloilo in 1984 and 1987. Drilon said both properties are mortgaged at P24 million. Cimatu, however, said he was not aware of such properties. "I was not aware how those were acquired. I'm not sure about those. I don't know," he said. However, Drilon asked him how he could not have known about the properties because they were in his name. Cimatu said he still has to ask his wife because she might have made the purchases for the both of them. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, however, said maybe the properties were gifts from the relatives of Cimatu's wife. Drilon said he recognized the possibility but that he still had to ask Cimatu about it. Enrile advised Cimatu to check the properties. Cimatu agreed. Former AFP fund manager George Rabusa earlier accused Cimatu of receiving P80 million as sendoff money through accused plunderer former military comptroller Carlos Garcia. Cimatu, the 36th AFP chief, headed the military from May 18, 2002 to Sept. 20, 2002. He was originally scheduled to retire on July 4 that same year but his term was extended by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. — GMA News
