Cecil Mamiit bounced back from a heartbreaking five-set loss in Friday's opening singles when he teamed up with fellow Filipino-American Treat Conrad Huey to win the doubles event of their 2011 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie against Japan. Mamiit and Huey, teaming up for the fifth straight time in the Davis Cup, pulled off a masterful 6-1, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Japanese bets Hiroki Kondo and Takao Suzuki on Saturday at the Plantation Bay Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu. The Filipino duo showed resiliency and better court coverage as the hosts finally scored a breakthrough win that may help them in their drive to win the five-game tie. The Philippines still trails Japan, 1-2. The victory was the first for the Philippines after Japan scored 5-0 sweeps in their previous encounters in 1996, 2008 and 2010. Kondo and Suzuki managed to put up a tough challenge in the second set, but Mamiit and Huey played solid in the tie break. The game was briefly stopped in the second frame after umpire Abdelraoof Abdulsalam of Kuwait accidentally slipped, hurting his hands and knees in the process, while he was going down from his chair to verify a call. Abdulsalam was rushed to a nearby hospital on a stretcher and was replaced by Korean Cha Hun Im. The three-day action ends on Sunday with Mamiit hoping to earn a win against Go Soeda in the reverse singles to level their Group I tie. A Mamiit victory would make the second game between Johnny Arcilla and Tatsuma Ito the deciding match. Japan raced to a 2-0 lead after winning the opening singles matches. Ito downed Mamiit in a marathon five-set match, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-7 (3), 9-7, while Soeda defeated Arcilla, who took Huey's spot in the second singles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. – JVP, KY, GMA News
