Filipina among victims identified by police in NZ quake

The New Zealand (NZ) police confirmed on Wednesday the identities of eight earthquake victims, including a 33-year-old Filipina. The NZ police identified the Filipina as Ivy Jane Cabunilas. No other details were provided by the police. Cabunilas is the first Filipino victim who was confirmed dead by the NZ police. Cabunilas was among the 11 Filipinos trapped under the rubble of the Canterbury Television (CTV) building, in Christchurch City, New Zealand. The building collapsed after the deadly 6.3-magnitude quake on February 21 this year that killed more than 200 people in Christchurch City. The seven other deceased victims identified by the NZ police on Wednesday were:

  • Rachel Elizabeth Conley, 27, of the United States of America; Dian Mary Falconer, 54, of Christchurch; Adam Stephen Fisher, 27, of Belfast, Christchurch; Marian Isabella McKirdy Hilbers, 49, of Christchurch; Kelly Lynn Maynard, 43, of Christchurch; Michael Stuart Coulter Styant, 41, of Christchurch, and Stephen Robert Wright, 46, of Christchurch. Meanwhile the 10 other Filipinos who are missing in the earthquake are:
  • Jessie Lloyd Redoble;
  • John Kristoffer Chua;
  • Ezra Mae Medalle;
  • Emmabel Anoba;
  • Jewel Francisco;
  • Mary Louise Anne Amantillo;
  • Valquin Bensurto;
  • Rhea Mae Sumalpong;
  • Erica Nora, and
  • Lalaine Collado Agatep. On March 3, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully has likewise extended his condolences to the Philippine government for the deaths of the 11 Filipinos there. "The Foreign Minister of New Zealand called yesterday, and he was extending his sympathy for the loss of the 11 Filipinos that had perished in the earthquake," said DFA Acting Secretary Albert del Rosario in a report on GMA's "24 Oras" newscast on Friday. "They've stopped the search, and they're going into another mode now," Del Rosario said. – VVP, GMA News
