Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.1 quake hits Lubang Island


A magnitude-5.1 quake shook Lubang Island in Southern Luzon before dawn Friday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was tectonic in origin and was recorded at 3:06 a.m. In its bulletin, it said the epicenter was 15 km southeast of Looc in Lubang, Mindoro Occidental. Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity II in Batangas City. It said an Intensity II quake is "slightly felt," or "felt by few individuals at rest indoors." While Phivolcs said no damage is expected, residents should brace for possible aftershocks. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 5.0. It said the epicenter was 35 km west of Batangas; 64 km northwest of Calapan, Mindoro; 99 km south-southwest of Manila; or 129 km south-southeast of Olongapo, Zambales. Meanwhile, Phivolcs said a magnitude-3.7 quake rocked South Cotabato Thursday morning, but said no damage or aftershock was expected. Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 7:02 a.m. with the epicenter at 31 km southwest of Koronadal, South Cotabato. It was felt at Intensity II ion Koronadal City; and in Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat. — LBG, GMA News
