ICRC sets up website to reunite families in Japan quake

With many people separated from their loved ones in the wake of a magnitude-8.9 quake and a tsunami that struck Japan, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) set up a website to help reunite families. But this early, the ICRC also warned the public against fraudulent emails that may request money. "People in Japan and abroad can register on the website to inform their family and friends that they are safe and provide their current contact details, while those looking for people can check the list for information. They can also register the names of missing family members and friends, encouraging them to get in touch," the ICRC said on its website. It said those with missing relatives can visit the special Family Links website (www.familylinks.icrc.org) to reestablish contact with loved ones. The ICRC noted the areas particularly affected by the quake and tsunami are the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, Tochigi and Ibaraki. It said the humanitarian service provided by the website is available to all and is free of charge. On the other hand, the ICRC also warned against fraudulent emails. "Please be aware of fraudulent Emails regarding missing persons in Japan. Should you be contacted by unknown individuals requesting money, please contact us immediately at gva_op_prot_as@icrc.org," it said. Only ICRC can change published data Only the ICRC can change the information published on the website. Those who registered their names as missing or as survivors must send an e-mail with their names and the details of their requests, the ICRC said. Those who want to modify any details for a name entered or delete a name completely can send the ICRC an e-mail at gva_op_prot_as@icrc.org. — TJD, GMA News
