Report: Taiwan to scrap restrictions on OFWs

Satisfied that Manila has taken steps to mend a row over last month's deportation of 14 Taiwanese to Mainland China, Taiwan will now scrap its recently imposed restrictions on Filipinos seeking to work there. Taiwan Foreign Minister Timothy Yang disclosed this after meeting with former Senator Manuel Roxas II Monday morning, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported. "The Taiwan government recognized Manila's genuine sincerity in wanting to resolve the row ... the Philippines' penalization of the two officials was of great significance and a way of saying sorry," the CNA report quoted Yang as saying. When asked if Roxas apologized for the incident during their meeting Monday, Yang said there are "many ways to express regret and apology," the CNA report added. He was apparently referring to the replacement of two Bureau of Immigration officials, including the replacement of then BI commissioner Ronaldo Ledesma by former Armed Forces chief of staff Ricardo David Jr. The Philippine government, however, had said that David's appointment was not meant to appease the Taiwanese government regarding the deportation of 14 Taiwanese nationals to China early this year. Judicial assistance mechanism Yang also said the Philippines agreed to talk with Taiwan on establishing a judicial assistance mechanism. With these developments, he said Taiwan's government will review its retaliatory measures and remove the extra restrictions it had imposed on Filipinos intending to work in Taiwan. Taipei had tightened requirements on Filipino workers in retaliation for what it said was the Philippines' disregard for Taiwan's jurisdiction over its own nationals. It also demanded an apology from Manila, although Roxas - an emissary of President Benigno Aquino III - refused to offer it during his first visit to Taiwan last month. — RSJ, GMA News
