5 dead as truck falls into ravine in Nueva Vizcaya


At least five people were reported killed after a dump truck that they were riding fell into a ravine in Nueva Vizcaya province before dawn on Wednesday. The ravine where the dump truck (with plate number UTP-733) fell was 10 to 15 meters deep, according to Kayapa town police chief Senior Inspector Jeoffrey Bulong. "Nahulog sa bangin ito, sa Barangay Castillo Village sa Kayapa ... Lima ang dead on the spot (The truck fell into a ravine in Barangay Castillo Village. Five died on the spot)," Bulong said in an interview on dzBB radio on Wednesday. Among the fatalities were:

  • Paula Agustin, 59;
  • George Sumera, 28;
  • Melanio Agayan, 39; and
  • Richard Paguio, 37. The initial investigation showed that the incident occurred at 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday as the truck was cruising along the national highway and heading toward Baguio City. Bulong said police are looking into whether the truck's brakes failed, saying that the area where the incident occurred was accident-prone.– VVP, GMA News
