Pinoys evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture, Sendai City reach Tokyo


Some 43 Filipinos evacuated from the Fukushima Prefecture and Sendai City in northern Japan have reached the national capital Tokyo on Wednesday night amid a nuclear crisis now engulfing the world’s third largest economy. The travel distance by road from Fukushima to Tokyo is 288 kms, according to Travel Math distance calculator.

The evacuation came five days after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and an ensuing tsunami struck Japan on Friday, damaging nuclear power plants in the northeast, particularly the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station near the coast some 225 kms from Tokyo where workers are trying to contain an unfolding nuclear disaster. In a notice posted on the Philippine Embassy website, the 42 Filipinos are identified as:

In a report by GMA News' Chino Gaston on "24 Oras," the Filipinos reached Tokyo on a bus shortly before 8 p.m., and will proceed to a church in the capital as their temporary shelter. The bus, chartered by the Philippine Embassy, picked up the Filipinos along Tohoku highway, the report further stated.

According to the report, most of the Filipinos from Fukushima lived the outside 30-kilometer radius declared by authorities as a danger zone around the damaged power plant. — JA/VS/TJD, GMA News
