NDRRMC: Death toll from Visayas, Mindanao floods now 14

The death toll from floods and landslides that hit parts of Visayas and Mindanao in the past days rose to 14 as of Monday evening. In its 5 p.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the latest fatality as Chad Lucaros, 18, who drowned in Cananga, Leyte. Earlier fatalities had included a family of seven buried by a landslide in Tacloban City; two drowning victims in Bohol; and two 12-year-olds in Surigao del Norte. At least two seven-year-old children from Leyte remained missing while a 12-year-old girl from Lanao del Norte was injured. The NDRRMC said the floods and landslides had affected some 47,912 families or 241,776 people in 527 villages in 40 towns and one city in Bohol in Central Visayas; Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Western Samar and Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas; Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental in Region X; South Cotabato in Region XII; and Surigao del Sur in Caraga. Of those affected, 6,151 families or 29,475 people were housed in 48 evacuation centers. At least 111 houses were destroyed while 102 were damaged. But the NDRRMC also said that as of Monday, Eastern Visayas is experiencing fair weather, with the Maharlika HIghway passable to all vehicles. - KBK, GMA News
