SSS: Families of killed Makati construction workers may now file claims

The Social Security System (SSS) said the families of the construction workers who were killed in Makati in January this year may now file their claim applications at the SSS branch nearest them. SSS said on Tuesday it has collected from the employer of the construction workers, Arlo Aluminum, the overdue contributions of the victims. Eleven workers fell from the 32nd floor when a makeshift elevator snapped as it carried them from the top floor of a high-rise building owned by Lucio Tan in January. Ten workers died while one was seriously injured. Arlo Aluminum was contracted to install glass windows at Eton Greenbelt, a 39-storey building in Legaspi Village, Makati. SSS president and Chief Executive Officer Emilio de Quiros, Jr. said "we worked on the case to help the families of the workers. Their employer, Arlo Aluminum, Inc., has settled its obligations." The company settled the delinquent contributions of the workers, ranging from five to 49 months, plus a three percent monthly penalty. De Quiros said the beneficiaries of the construction workers are entitled to:

  • P20,000 funeral benefit;
  • P10,000 from the Employees Compensation (EC) program;
  • SSS death benefit;
  • EC death benefit. According to the SSS charter, the state pension fund for private employees would bill Arlo Aluminum for other damages. Meanwhile, the SSS is stepping up efforts to collect from delinquent employers. In 2010, the SSS collected P979.46 million in contributions and loan amortizations from delinquent employers. The figure exceeds the P716.16 million delinquency collection recorded in 2009, an increase of 37 percent or P260 million. – VVP/RSJ, GMA News
