Doctor killed, hubby hurt in Quezon ambush

A doctor was killed while her husband, also a physician, was seriously injured when they were ambushed in Quezon province Tuesday afternoon. The Quezon Provincial Police Office identified the slain victim as Dr. Maria Paz Supiangco-Paredes, and her wounded husband as Dr. Rodolfo Paredes, both 57 years old and residents of San Pablo City in Laguna. An investigation into the attack showed that the couple was traveling on a national highway on board a van (XAW 265) when unidentified armed men fired at the victims' vehicle in Barangay Lusacan in Tiaong town around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the victims were still able to pull over on the side of the road after the shooting, but the attackers approached them and fired more shots. The couple was initially rushed to a nearby clinic, but was later transferred to a hospital in San Pablo City where the Maria Paz succumbed to a gunshot wound in her left chest two hours later. Recovered from the crime scene were four spent shells and two slugs of a cal-45 pistol. None of the victims' personal belongings went missing. Investigators have yet to determine the identities of the assailants and their motives for the crime. — with Mark Merueñas/RSJ, GMA News
