Early-morning glitch disrupts LRT-2 operations in QC

Another glitch interrupted the operations of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system early Thursday, this time involving a defective door on one of its coaches. LRT Line 2 operations manager Jose Laygo said the "technical problem" occurred at 6:47 a.m., involving a Manila-bound train at the LRT-2 Katipunan (Quezon City) station. "Mga walong minuto lang tumigil. Nagkakataon lang siguro yan. Ginagawa natin lahat (as part) ng daily maintenance (It disrupted operations for eight minutes. It is an isolated incident. We have been diligent in our daily maintenance)," Laygo said in an interview on dzBB radio. He said the train's operations resumed at 6:55 a.m., and insisted LRT-2 technicians quickly fixed the problem. Thursday's incident was the latest involving Metro Manila's light rail systems. Last Monday, yet another mishap disrupted the operations of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3, even as the Light Rail Transit Authority sought to reassure passengers of the safety of its trains. Several passengers of the MRT-3 had to walk along the elevated tracks early Monday after one of the three cars in an MRT train stalled. The incident occurred while the MRT train was heading south from Quezon Avenue to the GMA-Kamuning station. LRT Administration spokesman Hernando Cabrera allayed fears passengers in the affected car may have gotten hurt, saying all MRT cars have emergency brake systems. "Safe ang ating mga tren (All our trains are safe)," he said. — LBG, GMA News
