Coast Guard: Polish national dies of drowning in Negros Oriental


A Polish tourist died of drowning after a snorkeling activity off Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental last week, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday. Citing a belated report, the Coast Guard identified the tourist, Bartosz Les, was found unconscious and floating at the waters north of Apo Island fronting Turtle and Marine Sanctuary in Dumaguete. The initial investigation showed that after snorkeling activity at the Marine Sanctuary Off Apo Island, two meters deep and 20 meters away from shoreline, tour guide William Egera noticed the victim's floating body. He rescued the victim and brought him to the shoreline and applied cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with the help of personnel from Coast Guard Station Dumaguete. At 2:00 p.m., a certain “Petronilla", a resident of Apo Island reported the incident to the motor banca operator and brought the victim to Sitio Malatapay, Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental. However, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Siliman University Medical Center. "The victim was said to be on snorkeling activity when he got drowned on March 23, 2011," the Coast Guard said in a bulletin posted on its website. The personnel of the Coast Guard Clearing Outpost (COP) Malapatay received a cellphone call from a certain Mempoy Sumagang, boat captain of motor banca Melvin, that they rescued the victim at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. – VVP, GMA News
