NDRRMC: Four-year-old killed in Sulu floods


The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Tuesday reported it has recorded a first fatality from flash floods triggered by continuous rains in Sulu province since last week. NDRRMC executive officer and concurrent Office of Civil Defense administrator Benito Ramos said four-year-old Muggung Sarapudin was swept away by floodwater in Duyan Kabaw village in Parang town. Last Friday, Duyan Kabaw and two other villages in the town (Sinah and Alu Layag) were hit by a flash flood triggered by continuous rains, affecting a total of 19 families or 96 people after destroying 10 houses and damaging seven others. In Matatal village in Maimbung town, Ramos said the area was also hit by a flash flood and tornado last Thursday afternoon amid continuous rains, affecting 113 families or 513 people. “(The) affected families opted to stay with their relatives," said Ramos. Ramos said the provincial Department of Social Welfare, the Red Cross and concerned local government units are assisting the affected residents and at the same time conducting damage assessment in the affected areas. — LBG, GMA News
