Malabon mayor to lawmen: Get act together vs Sumera killers

Two weeks after a female radio anchor was gunned down in Malabon City, law enforcement agencies looking into the case were asked to get their acts together in going after the perpetrators. Malabon City Mayor Canuto Oreta made the appeal Thursday as he lamented there is still no significant progress in efforts to get the killers of Marlina “Len" Sumera. "Wala pa masyado ... Dalawang task force na ang itinayo pero wala pang nangyayari (Up to now there has been no significant progress. Two task forces have already been set up but the killers remain at large)," Oreta said in an interview on dwIZ radio. He said the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation should work together in getting to the bottom of the case. Sumera was gunned down last March 24 while getting ready to go to the studios of dzME radio in Caloocan City. Sumera hosted a public service program there. The radio anchor was buried last March 27, even as police suspect a land dispute to be the most likely motive behind her killing. "Mas mainam magtulung-tulong silang lahat, magkaisa isa lahat (It would be ideal if the law enforcement agencies looking into the incident got their acts together)," Oreta said. Earlier, Northern Police District head Chief Superintendent Edgardo Ladao also admitted no one has so far come out to provide leads on the suspects’ whereabouts. Ladao said tracker teams have already been formed to go after the suspects. Police have so far drawn up computerized sketches of three of the suspects. The sketches are posted on the website of dzME. A reward of up to P450,000 has also been offered for information leading to the solution of the case. The gunman was described as 20 to 21 years old, 5’2" to 5’3" tall, medium-built, brown-skinned, and wearing a white T-shirt, cargo pants, and toting a shoulder bag. The lookout was described as 20 to 21 years old, about 5’2" to 5’3" tall, medium-built, and wearing a yellow T-shirt and cargo pants, and toting a black backpack. A third suspect was described as 45 to 50 years old, 5’2" to 5’3" tall, medium-built and wearing a white jacket and faded denim pants. Ladao also said their initial investigation showed a 9-mm pistol may have been used in killing Sumera because of the gunshot wound in the nape. — LBG/RSJ, GMA News
